The Legal Landscape
Colorado has led the nation in natural medicine reform. Here's exactly where things stand.
Denver Decriminalizes Psilocybin
Denver became the first city in the United States to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms via Initiative 301. Personal use and possession by adults was made the city's lowest law enforcement priority. No arrests, no prosecution for personal amounts.
Proposition 122 — Natural Medicine Health Act
Colorado voters passed Prop 122 with 53% of the vote, making Colorado the second state after Oregon to decriminalize psilocybin statewide. The Act decriminalized personal possession, use, and limited cultivation of psilocybin and psilocin for adults 21 and older.
- Adults 21+ may possess and use psilocybin mushrooms
- Personal cultivation for non-commercial use is permitted
- Gifting between adults (non-commercial) is permitted
- Commercial sale is not yet permitted outside licensed Healing Centers
- Use in public spaces, vehicles, or near minors is prohibited
Licensed Healing Centers — Rollout Phase
DORA (Department of Regulatory Agencies) is licensing Natural Medicine Healing Centers — regulated facilities where trained facilitators can administer psilocybin in supervised therapeutic settings. This is the only currently authorized commercial framework in Colorado.
Federal Status — Still Schedule I
Psilocybin remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law. This means interstate transportation or shipment via federal carriers (USPS, FedEx, UPS) is illegal regardless of state law. ShroomCo operates exclusively via private local delivery within Colorado.
- No interstate transport — even between two legal states
- No shipping via USPS, FedEx, UPS, or other federal carriers
- Federal employment drug tests are unaffected by state law

Safety Guidelines
Harm reduction is the foundation of responsible use. These guidelines exist to protect you.
Set & Setting
"Set" is your mindset going in — intentions, emotional state, expectations. "Setting" is your physical environment. Both profoundly shape every aspect of the experience. Never journey in an unfamiliar, unsafe, or uncomfortable environment.
- Choose a private, familiar, comfortable space
- Set a clear, positive intention beforehand
- Remove potential stressors from your environment
- Have comforting items — blanket, music, eye mask
Dosing Guidelines
Psilocybin potency varies significantly by strain and preparation. Always start lower than you think you need — you can always take more next time, you cannot take less once consumed.
Have a Trusted Sitter
A sitter is a sober, trusted person who stays with you during the experience. They don't need to guide you — they just need to be calm, present, and know how to help if needed. For first-timers and higher doses, a sitter is essential.
- Choose someone you deeply trust
- Brief them on what to expect and what not to do
- They should not join in — stay sober
- Know the nearest emergency services location
Contraindications
Psilocybin is not appropriate for everyone. Do not use if you have any of the following conditions without first consulting a medical professional.
- Personal or family history of psychosis or schizophrenia
- Currently taking SSRIs, MAOIs, or lithium
- Severe cardiovascular conditions or high blood pressure
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Severe anxiety disorders or active PTSD without professional support
If a Difficult Experience Arises
A "bad trip" is almost always a difficult emotional experience, not a medical emergency. The most important thing is to not panic — the experience will pass.
- Change your setting — move to a different room or go outside
- Change the music — calm, instrumental works best
- Have your sitter hold your hand and speak calmly
- Remind yourself: "I took a substance, this will pass"
- Call 911 only if there is genuine physical danger
Integration
Integration is the process of making meaning from your experience and applying insights to your daily life. It's widely considered the most important part of the journey — more important than the experience itself.
- Journal immediately after — write everything you remember
- Give yourself 1–2 rest days before normal activities
- Avoid re-dosing for at least 2–4 weeks (tolerance builds fast)
- Consider working with a therapist or integration coach
